Introduction

As part of a government initiative to upgrade and expand health services, we were appointed to provide mechanical and electrical services to Hull Royal Infirmary, a new modular build addition to the existing hospital, spread over three storeys and separated internally via a large naturally lit atrium.

Challenge

The site was positioned close to the existing hospital, so it was necessary to keep disruption to a minimum. The challenge was to provide both mechanical and electrical services to the new building whilst maximising offsite design and installation techniques to minimise disruption to the existing facility. When working on site, programming of deliveries and materials to keep the public and operative’s safety was key.

Solution

Mechanical and electrical installations serve the newly created ophthalmology, dermatology and clinical skills departments with the primary heat source being steam, utilised via existing services from the main building.

The central atrium required detailed calculations to maintain winter heating conditions and minimise overheating during summer. Constant temperature twin pumps serve the underfloor heating in the atrium corridor ensuring a pleasant environment for patients and staff.

Designed to meet the relevant HTM and HBN standards, medical gas, ventilation, and air conditioning were also provided to support the building, along with power, security systems, and building management systems. All systems were implemented to ensure high energy efficiency.

Result

A sustainable hospital project with fully commissioned mechanical and electrical services meeting the objectives of the client delivery teams. The additional ophthalmology, dermatology and clinical skills departments and training facilities certified high quality health services for the area.
