Introduction
Our team was appointed to provide mechanical environmental services to a new gym in Swindon. This project comprised the refurbishment of a large ground level commercial unit belonging to a multi-storey apartment building. The services design and installation not only had to perform, but also adhere to the interior design aesthetic.
Challenge
Our challenge was to deliver a mechanical services design and installation which met the performance requirements of the gym’s facilities covering a variety of spaces, including, male and female changing areas with wc and showers, circulation and entrance lobbies and a large fitness suite.
The fitness suite area required the services installation to remain exposed and not concealed behind a ceiling, so careful planning and the correct specification of fittings was important. As the building was predominantly of residential use, we had to consider the design and specification of equipment that did not impose on the residents or affect the existing building structure.
Solution
Charleson Building Services provided mechanical services to support the facility including heating and cooling, ventilation, public health systems, and building management systems. We utilised new heat pump boiler technology to provide heating to domestic hot water services.
Due to the residential nature of the building, acoustic levels for plant equipment dictated at planning stage had to be maintained. Consideration was given to control the acoustic volume of plant equipment located at roof level by providing acoustic enclosures. This helped to maintain the ambient noise levels of the equipment. Anti vibration measures were also provided to the external plant at roof level.
We paid careful consideration to the plantroom design and plant allowances to ensure British Standard guidance was met and access and maintenance was not compromised for our new client
Result
A fully coordinated mechanical design and installation which met the design aesthetic of the gym while providing all of the environmental controls required for this intensive use space.
