Introduction

Designed to meet the demand of rising maternity patients in the area, we played a key role in providing M&E services to a £17.9m offsite building solution to create a new woman and children’s centre at North Middlesex University Hospital. The new building was part of a major reorganisation of hospital services in the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey.

Challenge

To provide mechanical and electrical services to a new modular building, maximising offsite design and installation techniques to minimise disruption to the existing facility. Due to impending pressures from high patient numbers during the winter build period, tight programme timeframes were a factor. The scheduling and delivery of site resources to maintain programme and keep safe both public and site operatives was vital in this busy hospital environment.

Solution

We provided a mechanical and electrical design solution, including installation and commissioning services to the new building which accommodates a consultant-led delivery unit, two obstetrics theatres, a neonatal unit, triage centre, women’s outpatient department and a midwife -led birthing unit with four birthing pool rooms, and a rooftop plant room.

The services included ventilation, heating and cooling, public health systems, medical gases, power, lighting, security, data and building management systems, all designed to meet relevant HTM and Building Regulations requirements.

Result

The services installations were designed using in-house teams and delivered and installed on site all within a project duration of 32 weeks. Project features include the incorporation of renewable energy solutions such as photovoltaics and combined heating and power systems. The project achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.

A fully commissioned mechanical and electrical solution was delivered on time, within budget and met the objectives of the client delivery teams. Planning, organisation and working efficiently with a large labour team combined with effective on-site management aided a smooth, timely completion.
