Introduction

Network Rail’s existing mess facility was set to be demolished as part of a redevelopment scheme aiming to improve the function and dependability of the railway infrastructure.

We were crucial in providing M&E services to new offsite modular solutions which replace the mess facilities and create new office accommodation at the Reading Train Depot.

Challenge

The challenge on this project centred around the location of the new buildings and their setting within the adjacent railway surroundings. We set out to provide the mechanical and electrical services to the new modular buildings maximising offsite design and installation techniques to minimise on site time due to the nature of the site location.

When working on site, programming of deliveries and materials to keep the operative’s safe was crucial.

Solution

The services design and installation included ventilation, heating and cooling, public health systems, natural gas, power, lighting, security, data and building management systems.

Each standalone building utilised its own methods of heat generation, combining traditional gas-powered methods with air source heat pump technology.

The ventilation systems utilised maximum fresh air with energy recovery via heat recovery units. The service installations were designed using in-house teams and delivered and installed on site within a project duration of 24 weeks.

Result

A fully commissioned mechanical and electrical solution was delivered meeting the objectives of the client and providing the Network Rail operatives with a comfortable and clean working environment.
